Cutting Cakes
There are various styles of intimate wedding cakes, including the "Cutting Cake," as it has come to be known. They are elegant single-tiered cakes adorned with fresh flowers or minimalist designs with delicate icing. Some couples opt for naked cakes, which have a rustic charm, while others choose personalized designs that reflect their unique relationship. Cupcakes or mini cakes are also popular, allowing each guest to enjoy a beautifully decorated individual dessert. But the ceremonial act of "cutting" remains, a ritual that has been associated with the wedding cake throughout history. The following are just a few of the types of Cutting Cakes that are both trendy and/or traditional. And as is often said, "sooner or later, everything old is new again" (Stephen King). Despite its smaller size and the fact that all the delicious goodness is wrapped up in a single tier, many brides and grooms are drawn to the idea of reviving the usage of elaborate icing as the cake's primary design. Termed "Lambeth" cakes, they are reminiscent of days past, some even pre-dating the time of Queen Victoria, better known as "the Victorian Age."
In this first example, the Bride and Groom opted for a traditional look and went all out for love with the heart shape. Note the different sizes of the design elements. The addition of the maraschino cherries gives it another dose of sweetness.
The "cutting cake" with a completely different treatment and take on the horizontal stripe. The elegant gold topper with natural white roses at the top and the base gives this cake a very understated but elegant look.
Another fan favorite, the horizontal stripe provides an incredible look of definition, a bit like a decorated trellis brimming with flowers. In this case, the bride and groom chose to embellish their cutting cake with different sized faux butterflies that they could keep as a reminder of their wedding day.
Without a doubt, one of our 2 most popular wedding cake styles no matter how many tiers, the "semi-naked" is not only a couple's favorite, but it seems to be a favorite of the wedding guests as well. Short on icing but vast in design, the "semi-naked" appeals to those who despite not having a sweet tooth, feel compelled to partake in this offering. Less sweet and considerably less rich than many of its counterparts, what remains is still a luscious cake with lots of personality. The buttercream roses across the top are hand made and are representative of just one of the many ways cutting cakes can be just as elegant as 5 tiered cakes.
One of the most preferred methods of decorating a cake of any size is with flowers. The question then is, should they be natural, or fashioned by hand with icing?
Natural flowers. Beautiful, fragrant and probably the most cost effective. But although the higher price is tossed aside, don't be fooled: the stunning effect is not.
There is no mistaking the refinement of a handmade flower when made with care, concern, thoughtfulness and lots of talent. That's what you have here. Florals and stems in different sizes, all hand made, hand colored and applied with precision. And did we say edible?
As much as we would like to take credit, we affectionately term the style of this re-created cake "Lila's cake." The brainchild of an incredible colleague of ours, this cake is as ravishing as it is delicious. Each flower is made with just the right thickness of buttercream to ensure that it will respond to the palette knife with which it is being created.
Last but not least and hardly the end, these sweet little cakes are quickly becoming the trending cakes, the ones that everyone is talking about. Whether you call it an '80's cake, a vintage cake or a lambeth cake, you will undoubtedly see more of these in the not too distant future.
